The Environment and Zionism center was established a year ago in the Eshkol Payis (science center) of Beit Shemesh.The center was funded by the KKL-Keren Kayemet Le'Israel . The aim of the center is to advance the engagement of students from Beit- Shemesh with the most pressing environmental challenges of our time, to integrate the principles of sustainable development and to advance behavioral change.
The Rationale behind connecting environmental issues to Zionism:
Zionism is defined as the national movement for the return of the Jewish people to their homeland and the resumption of Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel. In order to continue living here, in Israel, it is important to preserve and maintain the land

This past year 750 students from 15 different schools participated.
Description of activity:
The center is divided into three sections. The students are divided into three groups and spend 45 minutes at sections A+B and 90 minutes at section C.
Auditorium- the students watch 11 short films that convey the need to change our behavior in order to save the environment. During the films the teacher directs a dialogue in the classroom.
Laboratory - the students participate in a lab designed to teach the properties of water from different sources around Beit Shemesh.
The center - in the center there are 5 stations. In each station the students are required to participate actively:
o The forest - what is the importance of the forest? How do we conserve the forest?
o Water - what is the importance of water? What is water used for? How much water do we use? Water and agriculture throughout the generations.
o My city - where is B"S located on the map? How did B"S develop over the years? What are the environmental problems in Beit Shemesh?
o Natural Resources - What are the different natural resources in Israel? How can we conserve them?
o 60 years of development - people who made a difference, technological development in Israel.
